a lot more? I am wondering how this is perceived, because of a conversation I had recently with a friend who lumped the two together, as if they were equivalently low amounts. $14 is nearly three times $5, but in dollars, it's "only" $9 more, so to some, they may not seem far apart.

Actually, it is a huge difference if you compare based on a full time job working 2000 hours in a year.

$5 x 2000 =$10,000
$14 x 2000 = $28,000

It is a $18,000 a year difference in income spread over the calendar year.

I can see your friend's point of view. If you make $5/hour and work 40 hour weeks, you will make $10,000 a year pre-tax and will qualify for public assistance which will put you around $30,000. If you make $14/hour, that's about $30,000 a year too. Really, what's the difference? After tax you have maybe $18,000 left to live on. Neither wage is above the poverty line.

i don't get the question but 14 is more than 5 but 5 probably works harder than 14

the more you are paid the more you are taxed.
but yeah it's a little more but it's not really a big difference.
it just depends on tax because they just tax your pay anyways.
