Sorry about the earlier answer - I didn't read your question properly and submitted information about a CPU instead of a GPU.

50C for a GPU is not bad.

GPUs typically run MUCH hotter than CPUs. I would suggest doing a Yahoo search for your card's manufacturer, model number and the word temperature (ex: PNY 6800 GT temperature.) Video card GPUs will vary greatly depending on the series and even the same series from different manufacturers.

I have an NVIDIA 6200 made by PNY that idles around 40C with the stock cooling fan. I never put it under much of a load so I don't know how hot it gets when it works hard. The Core Slowdown Temperature is 145C.

My main computer has an NVIDIA 6800 GT OC by BFG Technologies. With the standard fan, it was idling around 68C. The Core Slowdown Temperature on it is 120C. The stock fan was not keeping up and would shut down the system when under heavy load if the room was warm. A search like I recommended above showed that a similar card by another manufacturer would idle around 50-52C. I installed a Zalman GPU fan and now my card also idles at 50C and never passes 61C even under heavy load on a hot day!

When GPUs get too hot, typically the computer will stay on, but the video card and monitor will shut off. That's when it's time to either remove the card and vacuum out the dust or improve the cooling system. A good rule of thumb is cooler-running components operate faster and live longer. If you have the cash available for a few improvements, why not do it? It's good insurance like changing your car's oil more often.

the temperature is going to vary depending on the speed of the processor so it's hard to say. a 3GHz cpu will run hotter than both a 2GHz cpu and 1GHz cpu.
