Sex is not a basic need. Basic needs according to Maslo's hierarchy of needs are food, water and shelter.

Of course sex is a basic need for the human race to survive. Sex is associated with intimacy and bonding and it has a psychedelic effect that makes fantasy, images and symbols seem real and fulfilling but that is deceptive. Still an emotional part of us believes it is fulfilling. Sex gets attached to other associations too. Security, status, survival, mostly unconscious unless you go through psychoanalysis. TV commercials know that they can warp our minds with sex symbols and how they exploit that.

Sex helps us to unload (no pun intended) our feelings , how the day went weather bad or good. Helps our minds focus, takes our minds OFF bad stuff that happened,makes us aware of each others bodies, makes us forget and just think about the here and now.Sex is a natural healer of the mind but also the body. Makes the blood flow and helps blood pressure. I could go on and on.But sex is a driving force that keeps this planet together.

All species have a subconscious aim to further their species and make sure it does not die out. It is this same subconscious aim that keeps many of us from wishing self-harm or death. Sexual intercourse is -and was originally- the sole way of spreading the human species' existance. As such, it was a means of survival for a species. As individuals it is not a basic need. As a species it is, perhaps, the one basic need. Without it we would have ceased to exist almost as soon as we began to exist.

It's not necessarily a need but it definitely is and should be a part of the life of a human being. Humans like all animals feel they must reproduce.

sex is the most intimidate way of expressing love for another being since you're both inside each other and caressing. adults have needs to have sex also to full fill need to calm sexual appetites.
