There are two things involved. First the British dvd will be encoded in PAL and not NTSC. Secondly, the region code on the disk will be region 2, not region 1.

A lot of players can convert PAL to NTSC so you may be ok there. As far as the region code is concerned, a great many players can be hacked to accept all regions. Best to check the model and mfg at http://www.dvdrhelp.com.

If your player can play PAL but there is not a hack to convert your player to all regions, you can still rip the dvd to a hard disk and use some freeware to remove the region coding. DVDshrink is good for that. If you have Nero, you can rip to a burnable dvd with dvdshrink.
