The first "battle" of the Civil War took place not in Manassas, but at Rich Mountain, in Randolph County VA (now WV). Fort Sumter wasn't technically a battle.

The guy that said Rich Mountain, VA (now WV) is correct. The first shots were fired at Fort Sumter, but that wasn't really a battle, and the first "major" battle was at Manassas/Bull Run, but the fighting at Rich Mountain occurred before Manassas/Bull Run.
