last thursday i went in for my eleven week ultrasound...they found a six week fetal pole(they think) ...no fetal heart beat... and a sac....they checked my blood...levels were fine...my uterus "is" tilted backward...i went in three days later my hcg levels had dropped some.I read they are supposed to at twelve weeks. My doctor doesn't want to see me until next week, what could possibly be going on? Could my baby have died six weeks ago? If so why isn't my doctor doing something? Could they just not see it? I'm so confused...i suffer from manic depression and have no medicine to help...i feel alone and empty...has anyone had a similiar experience? What happened? Should i go get a second opinion? I am at a loss here.

The best thing to do in your case is go to the ER, let them know what happened and they will do all the testing in one night and give you an answer. Emergency rooms are better when you want to know quick results. Your regular doctors will just order testing and take their time because they may not see you as an emergency patient so take it upon yourself to go and get the answers you need. Thats rough to not know whats going on ....good luck :-)

You are obviously dealing with alot right now, and it doesn't sound like you're getting answers (from your doctor) that are reassuring you.

One thing I can tell you is that through all my pregnancies, I had been told that if the doctor thought there was a problem, they would do something about it. The less time they spend with you, the better your condition.

I am not a doctor, but I looked up some info and here is what I found:

"The fetal pole is a thickening on the margin of the yolk sac of a fetus during pregnancy. It is usually identified at 6.5 weeks with abdominal ultrasound imaging, and 6 weeks with vaginal ultrasound imaging. The fetal pole may be seen at 2-4 mm crown-rump length (CRL), and heart motion is often detected when it is seen. In the embryo, the heartbeat is seen as a regular flutter, which should be first evident at 5 mm CRL. If the embryo is less than 5 mm CRL, it is possible for it to be healthy without showing a heartbeat, though a follow up study in 5-7 days will almost always demonstrate the heartbeat."

It sounds like not hearing or seeing the heartbeat could be common, and that he will recheck you in a week to detect it. From the passage, it sounds like this is the way it is done.

If you are that worried about it, or don't trust in your doctor, there is no reason why you should stay with him. Pregnancy is a long journey and you need to be with a doctor you can trust and rely on.

I would call the dr's office and ask to speak with the nurse for some clarification on what's going on. If she can't give it to you, ask to speak to the doctor. If he can't give it to you, see another OB. Do not hesitate to question this. This is what they are there for, and they would rather have you rest assured than stressed.

Let me know if you can about what happens.

I absolutey would go for a second opinion. Yes, a fetus can die in utero at this stage and you would not know this. Sometimes the physician will let the body take care of it itself...usually by suddenly aborting. Sometimes, at this stage he might suggest a D&C. THe key point here is there is no fetal heartbeat. In an 11 week fetus, there should be. If you are a manic depressive, why aren't you on some medication...were you and stopped because of the pregnancy? Please see someone now...this will be an especially hard time for you if the fetus has died. Just remember this...as hard as this is...there will be another chance at having a baby. This baby might not have made it because of many factors,...nothing of what you did made this happen. I have had 9 pregnancies in my life, and have 3 children. 5 I lost at 6-8 weeks...the other one I carried till 4 months, and it had apparently died in utero about 8-10 weeks. I had my first child with no problems and them lost 5 ...had another child with the help of some progesterone injections, and then lost #6...and went on to have my last child. So, it is possible...I am living proof. Good luck...and please see some one!

HI there. I just got discharged from the hospital 2 days ago after an evacuation. I was supposed to be 13 weeks pregnant. i got the symptoms and i felt my body changing and everything. I have been taking the pregnancy vitamins and folic acid as well as the pregnancy formula milk religiously but i started bleeding 4 days ago. I went for a scan and the doctor showed me a picture of an empty water bag which is 7 weeks in size in my womb. All this while i felt so pregnant (my pregnancy test kishowed positive and we went again to the doctor and she tested positive too) and now i am feeling so deceived and sad. I am still trying to come to terms with my loss. The cramps from cleaning out my womb out are still hurting me as i am typing this. I am also feeling very depressed right now and some people who keep on asking and asking me what happened are not helping. my husband has been consoling me but as a woman who actually carried an empty water bag for three whole months thinking that i am pregnant, i feel horrible. the ray of hope that i am looking at is that the doctor told me that after this evacuation, there is a 90% chance of a healthy pregnancy the next time round. till then i am slowly coming to terms with my loss for now.

for your case, try to calm down and do another scan to find out what is really the matter. I'm praying that you don't go thru the same thing that i went thru but we wun wanna take any chances. If there is no heartbeat check with your doctor if the babyb's ok. if noti would suggest that you do an evacuation to clean out your womb as soon as possible as it is not good to continue with the pregnancy. Cleaning it out gets your womb ready for a fresh pregnancy. Good luck and i hope u feel better after reading this. U are not alone. I guess there are many people like us out there.

First let me say that I'm sorry that you are struggling with depression. Even regular bouts of depression are difficult, and unmedicated manic depression isn't something I can even imagine. My prayers are with you.
Next, let me also say that worrying about the baby is normal. I worried over and over about my baby dying even though I had a perfectly healthy pregnancy. Even during the late pregnancy, if the baby varied from it's usual behavior patterns I panicked a little inside. It is not uncommon at 11 weeks for you to be unable to hear the heartbeat...it's happened many times before to many women.
I'm no doctor, so I can't tell you exactly what's going on, but I would suggest that if your baby HAD passed 6 weeks ago and the doctor knew, he/she would have told you at that point. If the doctor thinks he/she doesn't need to see you until next week, take that as a good sign. Doctors are not God, so they can't see/know everything, but I'm sure that they're doing their best for you.
I personally found I preferred the calming presence of a good midwife. If you find the right one, they tend to communicate much more thoroughly about everything that's going on, and treat you and the baby as respected individuals. If you would like a second opinion, try googling homebirth midwives in your area and see if one will see you for a prenatal. Whatever you do, make sure that you are comfortable with your caregiver....that's one of the best things you can do for your baby.
I know it's difficult, but try not to stress too much...it's much better for you and the baby for you to stay calm, eat a good diet, and take care of yourself.
Good luck!

You're looking for meaning in life when there isn't any. Life is whatever you make of it. And when you die, you leave everything behind. Basically what you should be focusing on is having fun and what makes you happy. Try to do some things you like, maybe bowling or going to the mall. Take some friends and odds are you'll meet more people and have a good time.

This site may help, it has a lot of information about the accuracy of early ultrasounds.

And, you may think about going back on any medicine you were on before to control you manic deperession. I know it is not without risks while pregnant, but mental illness is not without risks either. Speak to a pharmacist or other knowlegable person about taking antidepressants (or whatever you were taking) during pregnancy. I can not speak highly enough of the work that Motherisk.org does. I, personally, would call them about it, even if it is long distance (416) 813-6780 It can take up to 10 minutes to get through, but it is worth it.

First off, I would call your OB with these questions and demand that he or she answer you honestly. Second, if you aren't comfortable with the level of care you are being given switch OB's now, because you need to have confidence in your doctor. A second opinion never hurts. As far as your manic depression goes, talk to a physician about your medication options. The stress you are experiencing is not good for you or your baby.

First of all ignore the jack *** before me. It could be a number of things going on I think the doctor wants to wait a week to see if the levels have changed in your blood and to do another ultrasound. I know it tis hard but just wait until next week and hopefully everything will be ok:) keep your head up

I just wanted to say that the dumbshit who posted first was very hurtful. I'm sorry for that. I don't really have much advice except try not to stress too much because that could be bad for the baby. But being a mother, I know how hard it is to not stress when it comes to your baby..even when in the womb. I hope everything is alright for you and your baby.
