First, to answer your question directly...
There are really a lot of possibilities. The veil could just lift for no reason, or you could stay depressed at the level you are or just get worse. And say you do decide to emerge from the covers, it might be painful because of muscular atrophy. If you don't use your muscles, you lose them. I'm sure the tendons tighten as well. I've experienced this. It does hurt. Not like breaking a bone, but..
I've also heard of depression leading to more disturbing symptoms. I say disturbing simply because they may be kind of scary to experience. The symptoms may be, as they say, psychotic, like hearing voices or having visions of things or people not actually on the physical plane.
You didn't say much so if you know any of this already, just consider it a refresher maybe? And I do apologize if you don't want to hear any of this that follows. Some questions I ask yeild advice I don't want. But in case you do want or need this, I'm happy to help...
There are different kinds of depression. This may not be all-inclusive, but there is situational depression (a depression that results from an experience that you perceive to be traumatic at any level) and depression that results from a chemical imbalance among the neurons and feel-good chemicals like seratonin and dopamine. There are also depressions that lift with time and those that get worse with time.
If you've been through a tough situation then maybe you just need to talk to someone. Family, friends, religious leaders, psychologists, counselors, social workers, or even a family doctor might be able to help. A psychiatrist may help, too, because not all psychotropic medications are long term. They may be used just to get you back in the swing of things.
But if you've been depressed for some time for no reason, you may want to head straight to a psychologist, psychiatrist, or someone in the mental health feild.
If you're not familiar with the players in the mental health feild, check out the link below to another Q&A in which I explain most in detail. I also wrote a bit about some of the pros and cons I've learned with some first hand experience.
I won't say I've found my 'peace' yet, but it feels better trying than sleeping the days away. And for some people, everything works out real quick. Say right off you meet the right person to make everything make sense? Why wonder 'why didn't I try this sooner?' Or maybe you hit the right med first try? I've heard of it happening. Everyone's metabolism works differently.
And like I wrote on the other Q&A (as it applies perfectly here, too): I wish you the best. I personally think that the hardest thing in life is not wanting to live it. No one should have to endure the accompanied thoughts and feelings.

depression is serious so if you are having problems you need to work on getting out of it rather then what is the next step of it getting worse.

Depression can take on many forms. From feeling hopeless, unwanted or unloved to feeling like no one would miss you if you were gone. It may make you feel like people are talking or thinking bad or disappointing things about you. It can make you feel unattractive and unloveable. Like a loser.
The deeper in depression a person can get the more selfdistructive or angree they may become.

Taking medicine to avoid suicidal thoughts and actions may be needed at first. But the real answer is in knowing that Christ died for you and loves you and knows what you are going through. His heart aches for you and what you are going through and wants to help you. The more you learn about how much he loves you the more you will realize that you are a wonderful person with great potential. And even if you failed at something you can learn something from it and go on and do better the next time and maybe you will be able to be an encouragement and strength to someone else who is having a hard time.

If it is someone else that is in a time of dispair they need to do the above.

Hope you or your loved one reaches out to God cause he is there reaching for you/them.

Well, instead of looking at all that you "don't" have in life, think about all that you "do" have. Think about all of the people who don't even have covers to hide "under", much less a roof over their heads. Think about how grateful you are that God has blessed you with the ability to even "think." There are people who are mentally ill and on the street, no place to go, getting judged by strangers every day. Your depression is real, and you actually "do" have problems, but it's nothing God can't handle if you just ask, okay? Try it, and good luck, okay?

Well I would say that you need to look towards your future and think more positively. Otherwise you will probably stop eating, bathing, and all other daily procedures that humans do on a regular basis. Maybe you should find something that interests you and become involved in your community to relieve some depression. Or you should find someone to confide in so that you can turn back the clock and make yourself feel important.

I see you are depressed but you got to get up and get a grip and ask yourself why am i so depressed? If you cant figure that one out I suggest you see a therapist or your doc. I don't know how old you are but there are answers out there for you. God i know exactly how you are feeling. You feel the earth is closing in on you but I know there is someone out there that will hold your hand in your dilemma. Hang on there is a lite in the end of your tunnel. You have to make a promise to find that switch and turn that light on where you can see what you are doing.

you call a phyciatrist and make an appointment. You spend 300 dollars on each session, but after each session you feel a piece of the normal you returning to you. After the 5th or 6th meeting you feel like you were before all this has happened. You are happy that you can finally get along with like unlike those wierd kids who cut themselves and listen to Underoath

If you're feeling hopeless, it's time to get some professional help. You don't say how old you are, but if you're an adult, you need to check with your doctor about some medication, even if it's temporary to get you back on your feet. Your insurance company or your doctor can refer you to a therapist to help you sort out what youre feeling. If you're a juvenile, you need to talk to your parents or another adult and ask for help.

There is nothing wrong with seeking help when you feel this way. It is not shameful, it's empowering.
