The two terms with like bases (x), can have their exponents added together since all three terms are being multiplied together. It is understood that since no actual function sign is used that the terms are multiplied. It is also understood that since no numerical exponent is shown, it is 1. So:

= x^1 x^1 y^1
= (x^1+1)(y^1) - note: brackets used only to seperate terms.
