Each gallery and exhibition will have their own specific requirements for submittals so it is best to first look at the exhibitors' interests before deciding what to enter.
For general portfolios, usually it is recommended that you have 15-20 pieces in the portfolio, reflecting your strengths and interests as an artist. Works should have a similar sytle, theme, and medium. Though a higher number of works is tempting, it is better to have a smaller portfolio that is reflective of your best.
Also recommended is an artist's statement, which reflects your purpose for being an artist, as well as any artistic philosophies you may feel is important. This should not be over a page. Good Luck!

Well in your case you have to show at least a minimum of 15 to 20 paintings so the interviewing person can see your creativity.
Try to include diferent types of painting.

tonal paintings in one range of hued color to show facility with light and shadow and negative space!!still lifes and figure drawing!!costumed character sketches and paintings suitable for the population,area and expected clientele!!charcoal sketches of painted finished works for comparison!!photographs of larger works already mounted,comprizing 8 to 10 finished painting of 2' x3' size;2-larger works at 3 1/2' x 4' and the complimentary sketches ,drawings and tonal studies!!gallery referrences,satisfaction letters of endorsement from pleased clients!a brochure in color with ample illustations of your paintings with text verbiage and quotations!!an embossed business card!and also do a medium-sized painting all during the exhibit,taking time between palettes to communicate with your veiwers and interested passersby!!a folding potfolio case with a wide variety of sketches on divergent subjects!!!
