I don't think it's anything against "U", but against the "Ur-" prefix. It IS close to "urine," which is one of the only common words English speakers are going to encounter with that prefix. HOWEVER, both Uriel and Uriah are becoming increasingly popular in the U.S. among Hispanic populations, so clearly not everyone dislikes them!
My favorite name is Una, so I don't have a problem with Us either.

U tends to lean towards old fashioned names...and also more proper names. Some people have asociated it also with the upper aristrocratic names of bygone years. This day and age I think with everyones trying hard to leave those sort of seperations behind, they find it more irratating than anything. To tell you the truth though, I like Ulysess.

in high school my friends mom had two new children and she named one of them Ursula and at first I hated it but then grew to really like it.
i don't know any other u names personally.
why don't people like o names? olivia is becoming popular now and i also know a baby oscar but other than that the o names are few and far between.

I think it's because there are usually old fashioned names. My Mom's Great somebody's first name was Ursula. That's what my Mom's middle name was and my Mom was born in the early 20's

I think it is simply because it sounds strange on the tongue. And there is the chance of the child being called "U" for the rest of his/her life. I have to admit, I don't like the sound of it spoken aloud. It seems...too formal. However, if you love it, go with it!
