RE: Removing Skunk Smell From House
Post By Drowning in Skunk Smell (Guest Post) (11/21/2006)
Well, it looks as if luck has finally run out. Last night, my seven year old lab went barrelling after something like she usually does running outside. When she finally made it up the hill I heard hissing and growling, which I believe was the dog and the skunk. She came inside, and it being 28 degrees outside, had to stay inside until I concoted all of the mixture. THe house smells AWFUL. It's embarassing too because even after takin ga shower and running for more coffee grinds, people smelled the skunk stench. We've tried the cinnamon, we've tried the coffee grinds, we've tried the vinegar. The dog was done in the peroxide mix and then listerine/peroxide mix. That really helped her. I've taken down curtains/drapes/table cloths etc. Is this something that just eventually fades?
Or is this something that will continue to stay in the house until you do some secret thing? Anyone have the problem with the odor seeming to linger on you? I've washed clothing that was dirty, but everything in our closets are not washed. Should I be washing that?
I'm currently waiting to do all of the bed linens. I just feel gross.
Editor's Note: Putting bowls of vinegar around the house should help. Also adding it to each load of laundry. Use the white distilled vinegar. The smell will eventually fade but it may take up to a week.

Just went through this with my dog. She tangled with a skunk in the backyard and lost. She didn't even come in the house but the smell just seemed to ooze in through cracks around doors and windows. Felt like we were trapped in a bad horror movie. "The Smell That Ate Arizona" or some warped version of "The Fog", maybe "The Stench". Tried the tomato juice bath on the dog-multiple times. Smell faded just a little. Tried the 2 brands of skunk smell remover sold at Petsmart. Again, the smell faded, but was still there. Tried the peroxide, baking soda, dish soap mixture. Faded a bit more, but she still stinks. Met a guy that recommended imitation vanilla-NOT REAL VANILLA EXTRACT-MUST BE IMITATION! Its worked better than anything else. Poured it directly on her fur and dabbed her face using cotton balls. Let it dry and washed her. Did this twice. Her fur doesn't smell nearly as bad as it did, but the stench is still coming from her eyes. From all I've heard, you just have to grin and bear it till the smell eventually dissapates. How long is eventually? Wish I knew! Tried the cider vinegar and coffee all over the house, too. Its helped quite a bit. Still get a whiff every now and then. I'm off to spray clear imitation vanilla extract around the house. Keeping my fingers crossed...Thanks for the tips! Good luck, fellow stinkers!

If their is a way to get under the house make a batch of this stuff and spray it under the house. For every quart of Hydrogen peroxide, mix 1/4 cup of baking soda, and a tea spoon of liquid dish soap. This works wonders in getting the skunk smell of of a dog (keep it away from it's eyes though), off of you, or off of certain materials. Our dog attacked a skunk that was under our deck. Our house smelled so bad, because the skunk sprayed right by the vent of our dryer. I mixed up some batches of that stuff and went under the deck and sprayed everything. It stained the wood, but I did not care for under the deck. The smell went away in a day after that.
Woolite works well too. I used it on my parents carpet after my dog (the same dog...which is why his nick name is bad dog) was sprayed by a skunk at my parents house. He ran in the house and sat down on their new carpet before we could stop him. I cleaned their carpet with Woolite and it worked pretty good. The first mixture works better, but I don't know if it would be safe for carpets.
We tried Vinegar, and it does NOT work, neither does tomato juice.
Good Luck!!

Leeza has with the help of a procedures the superb concepts. My canines has been sprayed 3 circumstances and we are getting to be experts. Fabreze works large on the textile Shunk-off is the basically element that I have stumbled on that receives the lower than-mendacity greasy smell off the animal. FYI - possibly your mom did not have a decision yet to enable the canines into the residing house. the first time options were given sprayed, she ran mild a rushing bullet into the residing house and good onto the mattress.

my aunts dog got sprayed by a skunk and she had it in the house to and she used tomato juices on the dog and the house if you put the tomato juice in aspray bottle and spray the area it should work but you may check with the vet. because they should have some type of spray you could use that would probably smell better and work easier. febreeze could work if you didnt have to use it in a the whole house you could spray it and scrub it then spay it again, about three or four times.

Open the windows early morning, to let the sun shining in and wind blow into the house. Try some Lemon/Lime aromatic oil, it would definately help alot. Continue it few times if the smell never go away...
