Prismacolor makes two grades of pencil, Scholar and Premier - Premier is much better than Scholar. Derwent makes a good but VERY hard pencil. There are even better brands - Lyra Polycolor and Stabilo Softcolor. The difference is the waxy binder-to-pigment ratio. The more pigment in the pencil, the faster the colour goes down, without the image becoming shiny from so many layers of wax. A softer pencil makes for brighter colours, less work, easier blending, and better longevity.
Rule to follow - buy the best you can afford. The more expensive products really ARE better. Just for example, crayolas are made for kids, not for professional artists.

berol prismacolor pencils- they have softer lead, so they leave a brighter, smoother, creamy color - and they can be blended and layered, etc. they do cost a bit more, maybe a dollar per pencil - you can buy them separately at art supply stores or you can get assorted colors in a box. (lots of people say crayola, but these beat the socks off of crayola, in my opinion!)

Prismacolor pencils because they blend so nicely and are bright in color. Keep in mind that the paper quality is just as important.

I have some German pencils from LYRA Farb-Riese called Color Giants, they are "fat" pencils (approx. twice the diameter of most pencils) and I LOVE them! They are a little pricey, but I like the thickness & the lead is nice and soft.

In recent art classes, my art instructors had suggested Prismacolor pencils. Try them out, but they can be pricey.

Laurentien works fine for me. Crayola is good, but doesn't really last as long.

Berol, you get them either online or at an art supply store. They are sold in different size sets and individually as well.
