An AWD vehicle is not a 4 wheel drive vehicle. AWD supplies power to the front left wheel and right rear wheel, when the system notices any slippage. AWD is NOT technically All Wheel Drive.
Four Wheel Drive, actually does the same thing, depending on what type of 4WD system you have on your vehicle. Jeep for example, uses 4 different types of 4 wheel drive systems. The Select Track system allows you to have Full Time 4WD, Part Time 4WD, Neutral, and 4 LO. Full Time 4WD is Constant all 4 wheels in drive. Part Time is 4 wheel drive only when the system notices slippage. Neutral is meant for towing the vehicle behind a motor home, and 4 LO is meant for deep mud, severe ice, and deep snow, or heavy off roading. 4LO is not meant for highway speeds, or anything above 5 miles per hour I would say.

AWD generally supplies power to either the front or the rear axel all the time. For a FWD, for example, if one of the wheels begins to slip, the rear axles will automatically kick in to give you additional traction. When the slipping stops, all the power goes back to the front axlesThere is generally no input required by the driver.
4WD is where all 4 tires receive the same amount of input all the time. There is usually some type of input required to move the vehicle into 4WD whether it be electronically or manually like with systems that have manual locking hubs. Most 4WD vehicles are rear wheel drive, and when in 4WD mode add movement to the front axles.

Yeah! All wheel & 4 wheel drive vehicles are good for rainy and snowy parts of the country, if you live in LA they just good for nothing because they waste unnessesary gas and increases the maintenance price factor..

The Toyota LandCruiser has one of the most reliable Full-Time 4WD systems on the planet. Options include manually selectable locking front, center, and rear differentials.
Subaru has a very nice AWD system.
