There's a REAL strategy to that...I think it's to show the watch logo if there is one...like Gucci...if the hands are apart like that it's just the right amount of space...and no doubt there is some psychology and something to the "happy face" look of it too.

I don't think they do that with the digital watches though do they?

On analog watches, it's a pleasing angle, symmetry and orientation. Try to think of any other setting that you would choose as visually (and subliminally) superior...
However, I do agree with other posters, especially regarding framing of the logo.
