I'm applying for a memorial scholarship in honor of this woman Patricia McNamara who overcame personal obstacles to acheive her education, ect ect.
So, the topic of the scholarship essay is:
"In 1000 words or less, define diversity in your own words, and give a personal account of how it has positively or negatively affected your life".

Well...I want to write the essay on my own personal experience of living life as a transsexual person. I've gotten mixed opinions on this though. The scholarship is NOT for admission to the college, I've already been accepted, and it's from a private organization that is not known to be a religious or politically affiliated organization. So...what should I do? Because I think talking about transsexual in conjuction with diversity is pretty much hitting the nail on the head.

I think you should do it-I think it's best to keep the diversity issues positve- even if it is negative- talk about what you learned and everthing positive that came out of it for you. It makes you sound like a winner not a winer.

Hopefully you know about the woman the the scholorship is named after. clearly transexuality gives one a strong lived experience with diversity. I would just make sure it linkes in to some degree with the womans life.

Your topic sounds very appealing. You should write about it - never mind what other people think about homo/trans-sexuality.
