I guess the economy would have a problem. Many retailers live for the last month of the year to make a profit. That's where the expression Black Friday has meaning...the day after ThanksGiving is the day that traditionally kicks off the Christmas Buying Season and those retailers finally go from operating "in the red" (loosing money all year) to operating "in the black" (making money).

Given the culture of consumption in America, if there was no Christmas to spend money on then people would just spend money elsewhere. The economy, at least over the long term, would likely adjust according to the change in the patterns of consumption.

It would survive assuming that people don't spend money that they don't have during the holidays.
Even if they currently do, it would still increase the savings rate, which is the long-term key to growth.
In other words, yes, we'd survive just fine.

no christmas presents simply means there would be more money to spend on other things, like a new car or house or whatever.
The retailers wouldn't like it though because they depend on these purchasers to meet their earnings goals for the last quarter as well as for the whole year.

nope. some businesses rely on the holidays just to make even on expenses, without some sort of month/season of increased spending, many industries would go belly up, and mostly, stores as we know them would simply cease, or severely shorten themselves just to keep going.

yeah because people would just spend it on other things. my friend when I was little was a jehovahs witness and they dont celebrate holidays but they would do gift exchanges with their family in the summer anyway just for fun.
