The TPS or throttle position sensor is probably bad. Or you have a bad O2 sensor. Unless you have major vacuum issues. Like a badly leaking intake manifold or vacuuum line.
A clogged catalytic converter can also cause that or a restricted fuel filter.

Well if you are more specific with the type a car you have, more answers could be generated..
But here are just a few most likely things to check on most cars.
Trans fluid, kick down cable, accelerator pump, brake drag, timing, exhaust, cat, air intake, vaccum leaks...

this might go right over your head but on most newer cars they use a electronc throttle, so when the ecu (on board computer) see's that your going at a steady speed or "crusing" if will compensate by making it where if you put the pedal to he floor it dosnt have the same response as normal, so if your going a constant speed and try to pass a car or something it might just be your computer slowing it down, a good way to make that stop happening is to just tap your gas pedal a few times befor trying to accelerate hard,

but if your car is older then it might just me a broken throttle component or your filter's

i own a repair shop,and this usually tune up related or a clogged fuel filter on it,also a bad air filter will rob it of a lot of power,,it has to get fresh air to run good id start checking things,it can be spark plugs,,or anything that has to do with a tune-up ,,good luck hope this help,s.,have a good x-mas.

I know it's NOT your alternator. It's not getting something that it needs more of to go faster. Fuel,Air,or Spark(not just 12 volts)

Most likely the alternator. That would be the first thing I would check out. The LAST thing would be to check out the tranny

First check your fuel filter, then check your plugs and wires, then check to see if a vacuum hose is off.
