You are so right. He should atleast know the rules. Ever notice how concerned he is with the play clock? I bet he has called 20 delay of games the last two weeks, and there were none!!!! He has no Idea what a false start is, off sides either. All he knows is delay of game. He sux. He should suck a fart out of Chris' @ss!!

I have to admit that I am one of those guys who does not have the NFL Network. I will likely have it next year, so I have not seen Gumbel do his new job. Having said that, I am fairly certain he has not done anything close to play-by-play in years, and the NFL Network is very new.
I am old enough to recall ESPN when it started up. In its infancy, it had the same problems that the NFL Network is reportedly having; however, it was not on anything close to a big time stage like the NFL. They got to learn on small time sports, often kick boxing or motocross back in the eighties.
The NFL Network will take a couple of years and the hiring of a solid sports broadcasting exec and they will pull this thing out and do every bit as well as Fox or any of the others. The only caveat I see is that how is an announcer's objectivity going to be affected by working for the league. I bet you won't get any Howard Cosells "telling it like it is". The announcers may end up being nothing more than PR people for the league, just like the homers who do play by play on any team's radio broadcast.

His HBO sports program usually contains the most insightful, interesting and well-researched and reported stories from all sports. But above all he is a superb interviewer rarely stymied by off the cuff remarks or bound to a set of prearranged questions when speaking with notables. He is intelligent well-read and therefore able to easily engage his subject in what appears to be a completely conversational discussion rather than an interview. His absence from the Today show has left it a three hour morning examination of the world of entertainment having no substance at all.

I partially agree with you. Bryant Gumbel does...suck. But they have some pretty good camera angles. I like how the NCAA has the skycam. Maybe the NFL should have it to.

YES, YES, YES, he sucks out loud!! He tries too hard to sound smart. But, in his defense, these announcers have to watch what they say SO closely that it sounds fake! I say, let 'em talk! If you don't like them or you get offended....turn the channel...it's that button on the remote with the little arrows!!!
