If the light that is illuminating reads "check engine" or "check engine soon", its probably an emissions related problem. In order to resolve the problem, the trouble code needs to be "read" FIRST either by a reputable shop, a local parts distributor like NAPA, or a trusted mechanic. My local auto parts store(s) will read my trouble codes: fortunately I own a scanner, of course a lot of people don't. Does this model have a "maintenance" light? It might be illuminating an "engine" picture and it actually means the oil needs to be changed. So be sure that's not it; look in the owners manual if you have one. Unless you are mechanically inclined, the best solution for an actual "check engine" light is having a trained tech do the diagnosis and/or repair. I know its not as easy as removing the light bulb!

Well the first step to coming to a solution is to get someone to pull the codes so you have an idea of what's causing the problem.

If you don't have access to a scanner, start by making sure the gas cap is screwed on tight. NO kidding. This can cause a light.

Next, take it to someone who can scan for codes and go from there.

the same thing happened on my old car, mercury sable, and the mechanic said that it was just shorted out, and he replaced the fuse, but if it isn't that, then your catalytic converter needs to be replaced.
