I would like to be a writer one day, but one major problem I have is my last name. It's Famiglietti, I've only met one person in my entire life that said it right on the first try, everyone else has trouble with it. I'm afraid that a complicated last name will work against me as a writer. So what do you guys think?

I wouldn't change your name. It's unique and it's who you are and besides, writers are supposed to be able to handle complicated words right? Your advantage is that when someone wants to find your book in the bookstore they will be able to see it right away on the shelf - there won't be a bunch of other writers with that name. All they'll need to know is the first letter.... and since you mentioned it I have to try to pronounce it - so I'll spell it phoenetically and you can say if it's right or not... it's fam-eeg-lee-et-tee? If I'm right then you have the answer to your question....the average joe will be able to cope with your name...just make sure your book is really good and you won't have to worry about it!

no...it will definately make you more popular because people will be like 'wow cool last name' and then focus on pronouncing it...and it could work to your advantage like in the about the author section you could write how to pronounce your name...i would find that amusing...think about it, would you rather buy a book by an author with the last name 'Smith' or a cool name like your's?? Besides your last name isn't as important as your writing, if you are a good writer it won't matter if you have a different last name...don't worry just follow your dream and be proud of who you are...also to change your last name you'd have to go through a lot of paperwork!!! no one likes that!! another idea would be to write under a pseundonym (wrong sp. i think srry) like Lemony Snicket therefore you could keep your last name but still write under a different name, a lot of authors do that...good luck hope i helped!

I would never care about what my last name is. If anyones an excellent author in the world and has something to be told in their writing which Im sure you do, your book WILL get sold no matter what name is on the book guaranteed!! I have a pretty big collection of books and never once have I considered the name in whether or not I should buy it. You really need to just concentrate all your energy on telling your stories and they will sell. Its the quality of whats on the inside that really counts, not whats sitting on the outside.

Your last name has prominence . If your book is as good as your last name it might go as far as being a best seller. You might be surprised at how fast a last name adapts to the public once your book hits the stands, most likely you should also have a good title for your book. Your last name is great, I wouldn't change it unless you want total privacy.Until then you have plenty of time to make that decision. I suggest you work on your stories and put your imagination in gear . Good Luck in your endeavors and remember its not that difficult to put your best pen forward as long as you know who you are.

on the inside cover of your book or any other subsequent page, write a sounded out version of your last name, such as in text books for school that contain complicated and hard to pronounce words.
This will only complement the text as your readers would more than appreciate the knowledge of how to say your name correctly.
Anyways... It looks like a marvelous name and I think Its yours too keep.

Keep it. I have the exact same problem with my first and last name! Consider this: that name will stay in your head for the rest of your life (even if you change it). Too bad I had to come up with a screen name instead of putting the name Zaid (my name) that you will probably mispronounce.

Do what you can live with. Sometimes what you think is a negative may in fact be a positive. Writers would be in a better position to advise. Perhaps your question should be targeted at writers!

What difference does it make if people say it right? They can call you Mr. F or spaghetti or whatever...if you like your name (and by extension have pride in your famiy) don't change it! I had a very respectable, easy to pronounce English last name but I HATED it. Best $100 I ever spent was when I changed my name to one that I picked out and liked.

No dont change it, it's your last name, and it's original, do you wanna be just "another writer"? But well, if you just dont feel comfortable with it by the time you achieve your goal, then you can get a pseudonym.
Good luck and Merry Christmas
