You can prevent this by not worrying too much about it. Dance is for fun, so enjoy and have fun. If you step on his toe you say "I'm sorry". Don't worry, even if that happens - you won't hurt him badly, but you will see how he reacts to it and you will learn more about him. If whines all evening about it, or he just smiles and says "no problem", or he responds with a joke. Anyway, don't worry. Just don't do it on purpose and don't step on his toes with your heels.

You will remember the "dance" not a spill or a stepped on toe! Those things always happen! so just go and have fun!

If you make a mistake, the war in Iraq will be lost, western civilization will end, and Armaggedon will be upon us, or not.
Maybe you're putting a wee bit too much pressure on yourself. I've messed up big in ballroom competitions, and my (professional) partner has done the same. It's no big deal. And if you bump into/step on somebody else, the expected response is to say, "Excuse me," and leave it at that. These are routine events in dancing, even in top ballroom, where there may be six couples on the floor. In a crowded social dance, it's even more so. In England at one time social dancing was even called "crush dancing" because of its sardine-like nature.

Hey, the point of dancing is to enjoy it. And the key to dancing well is also to enjoy it. So stop worrying and just let your body have a good time dancing.
Here's a little true story. British TV presenter Ludovic Kennedy was at a party and he saw the famous ballerina Moira Shearer. He really liked her, but he was so nervous about having the cheek to ask this famous dancer to dance. Well eventually he plucked up the courage and asked her, and she answered "Emm... OK but... well I'm not very good at it." Of course she was joking, right? But as soon as they started dancing he realised it was true - she was all over his feet, scuffing his shoes, crushing his poor toes - turned out the famous ballerina was a well average ballroom dancer.
The result?
They ended up getting married. Go figure. : )

Well if you step on his toes you can fall into his arms and say, "I'm so sorry!" and then he should kiss you! Hope he's a hot date.

sit in the corner - don't talk to anyone - don't dance - don't drink anything you may spill it - don't eat anything you might drop it on your clothes. - or you can take a deep breath and act like an adult - go - have a blast.
