Watch. Watch as many actors as you can. Take note of their technique, their body language, their tone. And think of how you would possibly play the scene differently.
When you are acting, don't think of it as acting. You need to put yourself in the moment - in the scene. Pretend you are actually that person. What would they do? Say? How would they move? Some of the best actors are the ones who incorporate very subtle character traits into their performances.
Speaking of character traits, this is very important. Before you even think of getting on stage and saying your lines, spend some time thinking about your character. Try putting them in different situations and imagining how they would behave. Try to understand what makes them tick, what makes them laugh, what makes them FEEL. Once you truly understand your character, the "acting" part just comes naturally.
Best of luck to you!

The answer is don't act. Instead respond. Respond to what other characters say to you, what they do, the circumstance you are in. Find "How to Stop Acting" at your local book store. Greate tips on how to perform WITHOUT creating a character.
I think this what most people find hard to do, be someone else. If you can't do that, then be yourself. Some movie stars do exactly that and do very well. Owen Wilson for example. Robin Williams, and they're just the comedians in movies. The list goes on...

Acting is my passion. I've been in many plays in volunteer theaters and professional, as well as in high school. Its best to have theater lessons, but you can't always do that. I couldn't for a while. I suggest watching people in real life or on TV. Be a realistic as you can if that's what the part calls for, or have fun with it and go over the top if its a comedic role. Don't be afraid to do what your gut tells you. Oh, don't forget to be clear. I've found that if you think of a time when you felt the emotion your character should feel, the role is much easier. Put yourself in your character's shoes. I know it sound cliche, but be your character.

talk to yourself, sound weird but it helps. Its an excercise i do alot to maintain my acting abilities.
close the door so no one thinks ur crazy, then talk to yourself about your day as if theres sumone else there. and use hand movements and look at "them".
and repeat stuff, how could u say sumthing to sound angrier, or bitter, or kinder,
just play with your thoughts and words and maybe ur movements.
like i said it SOUNDS completely crazy but it helps explore how to use words to convey certain meanings and b4 u know it your acting
