There are a number of things to maximize your CPU. But, there are 2 areas on your computer which can form a bottleneck. How well a computer runs a game is determined by both the CPU and the graphic card - sometimes mentioned as the graphic processing unit (GPU). You can overclock both processing units. Overclocking is a term used to speed up a processor beyond its default speed. This is possible because CPU and GPU makers usually play it safe and have the processing unit run at a modest speed with a wide safety margin. As such, you can increase the speed easily. It is important that you remember by increasing the speed you will also raise the temperature of the processor. At very high temperatures, the heat will damage the CPU and GPU. I overclock both my CPU and GPU. But, I am no expert on the topic. Instead, I recommend you read PC World Magazine's article on overclocking CPU and graphic cards.

Before you do....
Doing so is called overclocking which can burn out or cause malfunctions on your processor if you dont set it up right. Also if you overclock it will most likely burn out the processor.

WHAT A GAME DEPENDS ON!!!:

Graphics Card:
Most games (modern games) require or sugges that your graphics card has atleast 128MB of Video RAM. That is NOT shared with the system memory. Also most recomend using a Ati or nVidia rather than Intel graphics. Ati or nVidia is MUCH better than intel.

Monitor:
Get an LCD (its the small thin things) DO NOT get CRT (its the big fat things.) LCD has better picture and also can reach higher resolutions than CRT. And make sure when you get your monitors resolution can go higher than 1024x768 Pixels

Processor:
Most games REQUIRE that you have a modern processor, Intel processor 4 or better.
Also it should be 2.2Ghz or higher (Dual core will also be much better too.)

RAM:
In todays time 512MB is hardly enough to survive in the computer world. At the least 1 GB is whats needed now. Also newer games are taking up more and more RAM so if you can go for higher system RAM

Hard Disk:
Since graphics and games are games are getting more detailed and more advanced,so it ends up taking up more disk space. Now adays i suggest you get atleast 80GB HD at 7200RPM (NOT 5400RPM).

Optical Drive (Your CD/DVD drive)
Since graphics and games are games are getting more detailed and more advanced,so it ends up taking up more space than a CD can hold and now they are now putting games on DVDs instead of CDs. (CDs hold a maxium of 700MB,DVD hold a Min. of 4.7 GB)

Operating System:
Most games still require Windows XP SP2,but do keep in mind windows vista comes out really soon.

Internet:
Depending on what game you get, make sure your internet can handle it if the game requires the internet (like halo and Halo 2). If you still have dial-up, GET RID OF IT. Always get Broadband if avliable. (Settle for DSL only as a last resort) AT&T highes speed is still about 730 Kbps. While basic broadband has 100 Mbps.

Speakers:
For the best gaming experience get a sound system with a subwoffer.

Mouse:
DO NOT GET A BALLED MOUSE. ALWAYS GET A OPTICAL LASER MOUSE.

Gaming relies heavily on the video card, because that's what processes the video frames.

The CPU usually only makes a difference in video encoding, Internet usage, everyday stuff. In games the video card is more important.

You might want to learn how to overclock your video card and maximize it's potential. However, make sure you know what
you're doing before overclocking anything.

If your PC components are too outdated, then no amount of overclocking is going to make up for the performance gap. You might want to get a new PC.

Can you give us your system specs?

Graphics and CPU are needed, along with memory.

To increase preformance

Get more RAM
Get a better CPU or Graphics Card
Overclock what you have*

*Due to the laws of resistance, you need to cool the unit being overclocked, or the heat will counteract speed gain and even damage the chip to the extent of breaking
