A great book to get is "How to Play Jazz and Improvise" by Jamey Aebersold. The book comes with a CD to play along with and he takes you through scales and runs that work over certain chords. Also I recommend getting a "Real Book" and start learning some of the melodies to jazz standards as well as mastering the chord phrasings by playing each note of the chord on whichever instrument you play. Good luck!

To learn how to play by ear, just listen to a song, and play back what you hear. learn the song bit by bit, and then eventually your ear will get good enough that you should be able to know exactly what is being played.

For improvising, use the arpeggios of the chords (1-3-5-7-9), especially those thirds and the sevenths. Play your scales up and down, in thirds, fourths, fifths, and as many ways as you can. Also, start learning the modes, and see which ones you can use over various changes (I.E. 2-5-1 progressions, blues changes, "I Got Rhythm" changes).

Then it's all about practicing.

Jazz improv is a thing of the soul - sorry no one can teach it you must learn by first listening and imitating the masters. Whatever instrument you play there is a Jazz Master or 50, just seek them out listen, play and create. Good Luck!

Here's a tip regarding the display and search of your question...

The word jazz isn't coming up in searches for jazz because the "?" is connected to it. You might have a better response if you have the word "jazz" with a space before and after the word.
