Go with Intel Core 2 Duo - that will be the trendsetter most definitely now and the years to come.
In the past, that statement has been true. That AMD generally speaking has been right on par with intel, where they didn't match performance, than price was a huge hit.
Such is not the case with the Intel core 2duo - AMD has no answer to it. It utterly thrashes and dominates AMD, hands down in performance and even in cost-to-performance (where AMD certainly has excelled in the past)
AMD has yet to answer back. Maybe they will and it'll be better, maybe they won't - but all their dyes on the market - or likely near-release - gets stomped by it every way from sunday.
I've been a long time AMD fan. A long time AMD user. My last intel chip prior to Core2 DUO was a 450Mhz CeleronA. But, I go with performance - not a brand name, and Core2 will be kicking in AMDs teeth for quite a while. ;) While, at this current date, this may or not not be in your price range -- it will be the best in performance for a very long time. AMD doesn't even have much on the block in answer to it.
Not only does it corner the market on performance, but also - surprisingly - it comes along with very low power usage. Where in the past, the best-performance has meant it sucks up the heat of the sun ; )
"Game Over" for AMD - for quite some time. See source.

Examples in other tests pretty much mirror that.
If this is out of the price range, you should take 2 computers that are in your price range -- and compare features. The "Extras" of course come into play, but if you ask a Yahoo! question about performance between two specific chipsets of laptops you are considering, I'm sure you'll get an adept answer that shows a comparison between them. And then, using that information, you can see if the price differences or extras is worth it.
If you want the best - and likely the best for some time to come, intel core 2duo -- the one to beat that short term is intel, with higher clock speeds and quad core -- AMD again doesn't even have anything on the block to answer it. :)

They're last generation laptops that offer pretty good performance. However, they do not support 64-bit Windows Vista, so they might become obsolete in a few years.
The Intel Core 2 Duo laptops, however, are the best laptops on the market today. They are seriously performance powerhouses.
As for AMD, well, it's no longer as good as Intel in terms of performance and pricing.

Well although with single core i say AMD blows Intel out of the water. When it comes to dual core CPU's Intel has the cream of the crop. They are capable off almost a 30% increase in speed over single core. You will mainly see the difference when multitasking or using memory intensive programs such as games or movie editing. In summery the core 2 duo is a great CPU....

In my personal opinion, I've never used an Intel. I've always used AMD and always been happy. They are cheaper and just as efficient, if not more efficient.
