I used to think the S stood for Superman, but that doesn't explain why it's on Jor-El's shirt too.

it's not really an 's'... it looks like an 's' in english.. and I think lois Lane coined the term 'superman'. Clark Kent didn't go around calling himself superman.

It's superman's family crest from Krypton. That's why Jor-el has it too..

For some reason, in the '78 movie, they put the "S" in, which made little sense, considering that Kryptonian writing was supposed to be totally different than the roman alphabet. At the time, the movie was way off, as far as DC Universe continuity was concerned.

Nonetheless, that movie had a great influence in the revamping of Superman in '86. Even still, the "S" came when he became Superman, nothing from back in Krypton.

the crest IS the family symbol of the house of EL, and it is also the character for the word son and the symbol for the kryptonian letter S in kryptonese (the language of the people of krypton), and also here on earth it stands for superman.

WHAT DO THEY TEACH KIDS IN COMIC
SHOPS THESE DAYS??.........

(Kinda like "What do they teach kids in school these days?")

The "S" on Superman's costume, the same one that is on his father's clothing, is the Kryptonian symbol that represents the House of El. It is their family name, crest, coat of arms, etc.

KAL-EL
JOR-EL

Notice any similarities?

I sure wish the original writers ( Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster) could answer... I can't help but feel this is all conjecture and supposition.
