Not all people do this. But the ones who do, do it for the obvious reasons that money buys things. We humans love to glorify ourselves with clothing, jewelry, houses, cars, etc., etc. Poor people can't help anyone get those things. Also many people equate wealth with self worth and being around the poor sometimes causes people to be very uncomfortable and look at themselves.

Fear.

People mistakenly assume that the poor are the ones who'll rob you, lie to you, harm you, or are drug addicts. The well off look safe.

It's interesting to me, because when a poor person is in trouble (Hurrican Katrina for example) I heard people saying things that made it seem like they asked for it; like they should have been better prepared. Not only the poor were in trouble. It was an equal opportunity tragedy. But for some, it's sad when their equals are in trouble, but those that the see as beneath them should have known better.

You would think that this time of year would bring out the best in people, but it doesn't. Christmas just highlights the vast economic differences in our country.
