Preferably Oakland, San Diego or LA so tell me about the atmosphere, people, hot spots and etc. I need a change from the east coast so let me know what is going on in the west.

Well, although all three cities are in California -- they are incredibly different. I don't understand how you came to consider Oakland as a city to relocate too. Immediately scratch Oakland off your list.

San Diego and San Francisco are very different. SF is very liberal, culturally diverse, and probably has the closest feel to an East Coast city. They bay area has a lot to do in terms of entertainment, night life, and culture. The weather is mild, but somewhat cold for California standards.

I live in San Diego. This town is for the most part, conservative. The weather is the best in the country. I think today it was almost 70 degrees and sunny. We have great beaches, and downtown has an awesome night life. SD is not as expensive as the bay.

LA is a toxic crap hole. People who live there usually, can't leave for a variety of reasons.

I live about a 20minute drive away from Oakland and there are some small good parts of Oakland but then rest of Oakland is kind of a bad commuinty. So if I were you I would move to San Diego, it's much more peaceful then Oakland. plus you have beach right in front of you. Hope you find a great place to live in on the west coast

I would say San Diego out of all three. Oakland is a mixed bag and both the Bay and LA are ridiculously expensive. You can find something more affordable further south.

Atmosphere is very open and laid back. Beaches are wonderful, traffic is terrible, lots of fun places to visit. Take a trip before you take the plunge and move so you know what you're getting into! :)

I lived in S. Cal most of my life, last in Orange County, the County immediately south of L.A. County, and the best place to live on the west coast, and probably in the world. I now live in Texas. Be prepared for astronomical real estate prices, traffic, and lots of people. Another good place to live (where lots of Californians are moving to) is the Pacific Northwest, i.e. Seattle area or area between Seattle and Vancouver, BC Canada. The lifestyle is similar but the weather a bit more cozy but never a freezing problem if you live close to the ocean. The ocean acts like a giant temperature control mass that moderates the temp on the entire west coast. That's why the west coast has such nice even temperatures.

Don't move to URBAN California. Too expensive. Never consider Oakland, the capital city of EBONICS and the natives are restless too. Try the lower part of the SFBA, like Morgan Hill or Gilroy.
Our if you REALLY want a change, try DENVER, Colorado or some of the suburbs. The nightlife in Denver is always jumping, The ski area are 2 hours way ( when it is not snowing ) and we'd rather have someone else than CALIFORNIANS moving in...

if i were you i wouldnt move to oakland but i would move somewhere else in the BAY AREA. OAKLAND already has 149 homicides this year. If i were you i would move to San Francisco if you want to live in a city, It is close to oakland but much safer. If you want to live in a small town in a nice area i would move to Mill Valley (number 7 in all of US). I suggest that you move to MARIN COUNTY in California. It is a little more expensive but it is very safe and has a good atmosphere.

I grew up there, in Modesto. I moved to Alaska on 1983 and LOVE it up here. I don't know about California now...but you should consider Alaska!!!It's beautiful everywhere. As far as people go...you'll find the same people there you left on the East coast. It ain't the people...it's you. If you have a traveling bone...GO!
