As your labor progresses your baby is supposed to move down further toward the birth canal. During this time, the pressure from the baby is what causes your water to break, which is really just the amniotic fluid leaving from aroudn the baby. Some women's babies do not put enough pressure for the sac to break. When this happens, they do have to have it broken for them. It does not always speed up labor. My water broke @ 12:00am and I was dialated 1 cm for 7 hrs. My labor was supposed to be induced by usin Pitocin, but when the doctor inserted the medicine that was supposed to soften my cervix, it caused me to start having contractions. Anywho, everyone is different!

First of all, I'm noticing women commenting on other women being impatient and just wanting to get the baby out. In some cases, yes that is the truth..but to make it seem that every woman does this is ridiculous. I was overdue and they broke my water to induce labor...we weren't impatient. There are risks that you have to think about. If my son got too big (waiting for labor to come naturally) he:
1: might not be able to fit out resulting in c-section
2: could break a shoulder or collar bone
3: the mother could need reconstructive surgery
4: could cause stress on mother and baby
They also broke my water first to see if I would need drugs to induce labor..which I never needed. They wouldn't have figured this out without breaking my water. And thank god they induced, my son was already over 9 pounds. But you know what, I didn't really care about my son's safety. I didn't care if I broke his bone, just had to get that bastard out. Right Lesley?

most doctors/midwives don't break the waters coz they " just impatient " mine have never gone on their own and for the health of the baby had to be broken, the labour was going on to long and baby wasn't happy,
it also speeds up labour i was at 9+ Cm's for hrs, bulging waters just wouldn't break so they did it for me and baby was born within Min's.
every women is different but Ive had 4 and mine have been broken every time, so im guessing that this 1 will be as well

Every pregnancy was different for me. The first pregnancy, my water broke about 8 hours after regular contractions started, the total labor time was 15 hours and I was 37 weeks along. The second pregnancy was induced because he was huge, 9 lbs and 42 weeks....I swear that was the hardest one of them all because even though they broke my water, in the end, I failed to dilate and they performed a C-section. Last baby was a scheduled C-section at 38 weeks due to gestational diabetes.

Everyone is different.
I know they break the water for you to speed up the labour. Like the other person said...Doctors are impatient. They want to get you in and out asap.
