I understand tradition and all, but come on, the spoon and fork are clearly major upgrades, not to mention the knife. After all, they use plows in the fields...its not as if they are plowing with two pool cues attached to the tractor! What gives?

I used to tell friends. The use of chopsticks is an extension of his reach. He can reach the food of his opponents or opposite his seat. I think this is a good reason judging from how the people eating together with a dish of goodie in the centre of the table surrounded by hungry workers in a goldsmith shop or a pawn shop or a trade house where food is provided including their monthly or daily wages. Imagine where a fork or knife is used. There will cut and bruises. Chopsticks hurt but not as serious as fork and knife. What say you?

Why do so many non-Asians still refuse to use chop sticks? Too clumsy to use them? C'mon. There are a lot of Asians born and raised here don't know how to use the sticks. Others can and like that. It's not that they use the chop sticks all the time. It depends on the kind of food. You must give them the credit for their flexiblilty, open-mindedness, dexterity and adaptability. Why don't you try to master the use of chop sticks and you will find instances when chop sticks are more convenient.

why did so many europeans/american start usi forks and knives and spoons? i understand the love for 'upgrades' and technology and all, but come on, chopsticks are clearly oldies and goodies, not to mention nifty chopstick holders so you don't even get the table dirty. after all, they still have antique shops where old useless things sell for thousands! it's not as if everyone is splurging on all the lastest technology all the time. what gives?

Many restaurants I went to in South Korea had the entire selection on the table, however, most people prefer chopsticks. That even includes the foreign parties. If you know how to use them properly, it's almost as easy as using your fingers without the mess. In many ways, I prefer the chopsticks as well.

Straws, I think everything we eat should be made into a puree then we can use straws. That's clearly superiour to knives and forks, plus better for the digestive system. That's what I think...
