First, 1943 -1945, pennies were made of steel. So many were made, they aren't particularly worht much today. To clarify the copper issue, most of it went to the Mnahattan Project to produce the Atom Bomb. It was used to make wires for conducting electricity for the project. There was a huge need for great amounts of electricity for this purpose. Actually gold was preferred because fine wire can be drawn form gold and in some cases it was used but not near enough gold was available for this application.

Copper went to the war effort. Brass for cartridge and shell casings, gilding metal for the outside surface of bullets. We had plenty of iron ore, so steel was the obvious choice.

Because copper was needed for the war effort. It was a lot different in those days. Gasoline was rationed. Sugar was rationed. Everyone sacrificed for the war effort. Today, only military personnel and their families are asked to sacrifice anything. Everyone else just complains about high gas prices for their SUV when they drive to the mall to shop 'til they drop. The biggest sacrifice most Americans make is to put a "Support Our Troops" bumper sticker on their gas-guzzling SUV.

Because copper was needed for the war effort. The U.S. mints made pennies from zinc. I would bet that zinc pennies from that era would be worth a fortune now.
