JOLIET TOWNSHIP -- Christine Sanborn had just one thought as she struggled with the man who allegedly tried to take her from her car Tuesday night.

"I wasn't going with him. I've heard what happens when they take you someplace else and I kept fighting to stay there. I wasn't going with him," she said.

She didn't and was able to give police information that led to the arrest later that night of Leonel Saavedra, 32, of 644 Sandpiper in New Lenox.

Sanborn was on her way to work when she stopped around 8:15 p.m. at a liquor store in the 1800 block of East Washington Street.

"I'd come out and was getting into my car when he came up, grabbed me by the back of the coat and told me to get out of the car. I thought it might have been a policeman because he said it with such authority," Sanborn said.

It wasn't, and in an incident captured on the store's surveillance cameras, Saavedra apparently tried to pull Sanborn from the car.

"I'd never seen this man before and he held this silver object to the back of my neck. He told me 'I'm going to (expletive) you then kill you.'"

Sanborn hooked her arm around the steering wheel of her car and refused to let her attacker remove her from the vehicle. She began screaming and honking the horn to draw attention.

Sanborn said Saavedra noticed passing motorists slowing down at the noise. According to reports, he told her "Don't tell anyone," and left in a white Hyundai.

Shaken but unharmed, Sanborn started to run into the liquor store when she remembered something.

"I used to work in a gas station and we were always taught -- get the plate, get the plate," she said.

Sanborn ran around her vehicle and was able to view the license plate. She then went into the store and called 911.

While Will County sheriff's deputies arrived at the store, a description of the vehicle was broadcast to local agencies. sheriff's spokesman Pat Barry said. New Lenox police spotted the vehicle about a half-hour after the attack in a parking lot at the intersection of Nelson and Laraway roads.

Saavedra was brought back to the liquor store where Sanborn identified him as the man who attacked her.

"I called my husband after calling the police and he came running to be with me," said Sanborn. "It was hard for him to be there when they brought the guy back."

Saavedra was arrested and booked into the county jail on charges of aggravated assault, battery and vehicular invasion.

Sanborn called off work and felt a mixture of nerves and relief.

"I'm just so glad they got him," she said. "I want people to know about this so it won't happen again."
