There was no one "silk road". It was travelled for centuries, from the Parthians omn 53 B.C., Greeks, Romans, and finally, Italian Marco Polo in 1271 started his travels at 17 yrs of age. A romance writer heard his tales while he was in prison and began writing about them. Not only the silk trade, but gold, other precious metals and stones, ivory, glass, furs, ceramice, jade, bronz, lacquer and iron were traded.
