From the symptoms you describe, the hard drive is not the problem. If the hardrive didn't work, you wouldn't be able to get to a windows screen.
This type of thing usually happens after you have changed something or installed something.
Windows is having problems with a device driver or something when it is loading and crashing while loading.

When you first boot up, just before the computer tries to start windows, or just after the BIOS screen, start pressing the f8 key.
It will give you a list of options for starting windows.

Choose the safe mode option and try to boot that way.
If this works, try to remember what you did just before it stopped working and undo it.

If you can't fix it this way, you will probably need to either take it to a specialist, or reinstall windows yourself.

Either way you should be able to get the machine back up and running.
Good Luck!

looks like your windows is buggered!

few things you can do -

use your install cd to do a windows repair

use your windows cd to do a fresh reinstall (loose all current data)

use your windows cd to do a fresh reinstall -BUT- dont delete any old partitions and reinstall exactly over the old windows copy

just before it goes to the windows screen, hit the f8 key and select the safe mode option, and trouble shoot from there, for example you could reapply the last service pack you had which would rewrite any corrupted system file.

use the 'Last known good' option in the f8 screen to revert to a previous windows state - (the state that was recorded when you last successfully logged in)

If the Hard Drive is less than 3 years old. It might still be under Manufacture Warranty. Search you Hard Drive Manufacture and find out it may save some bucks...
