Back when he was first elected, it wasn't a big deal. he himself said that he joined for the social aspect, not the racist part. And Byrd, unlike many, has changed along with the times. he's not still stuck in "the good ole' days" Like so many are. He has since become the senate's staunchest defender of human rights and the United States Constitution.

first off.. that's like asking why do Republicans support an alcoholic as president...
second off... you clearly don't know that only a very small number of dems actually vote for him... he's in West Virginia and only West Virginia votes for him... not a lot of dems there... Bush easily won the state in 2004
so why do Republicans vote for him?

west Virginia votes for him,because he does what he is elected to do. something very few politicians do. the KKK was a launching platform for quite a few political careers,dem and repub.
