I rented a house and the previous tenants left behind several boxes of legal paperwork (business contracts, tax forms and the like.) The rental agent called them and they were supposed to pick this stuff up in August but never showed. It's been four months since I moved in. Can I throw this stuff out, or am I legally obligated to keep it? I don't have their phone number but they have mine.

The law states that you have to give them a "reasonable time". 4 Months is more than reasonable.

Actually the owner/property manager should have picked this stuff up before you moved and contacted the tenant.

You have no obligation to safeguard their property. The owner of the rental property is the only one that has any obligation to the previous tenants.

Contact the rental agent and advise them that if the property is not collected by a certain date, either by the owner or the previous tenants, you will dispose of it as you see fit.

30 days would have been long enough, 60 would have been generous. Four months? And they haven't contacted you? Trash it.

You could be real generous and shred or burn the stuff with personal info that could lead to identity theft, but that would be above and beyond reasonable. What does the rental agent say? He/she could always come over and get it for them.

I believe that you can get rid of the junk. They obviously don't need it.
