No, but it would be nice if you did.

I would graciously thank them for the gift, but decline the acceptance of said gift, if I did not have a gift to reciprocate. I have the strong urge to reciprocate gift giving, even though I know it is a social standard. This is the reason I want to become a hermit in the mountains. To get away from society's pretensions, and become true to myself.

Well, If it were me I definitely would give back. It doesn't have to be something extravagant, just a simple Christmas card would do nicely. Even if you were to pick up a little something for them it wouldn't hurt anyone to give back. It is not expected of you to reciprocate but I'm sure that the person you are giving to will appreciate anything you were to give them. You could take the time to call them or invite them to lunch or dinner with you and not even have to worry about getting a gift for them.
Hope this helps!

I guess it is sort of expected, but if there was no reason for you to expect a gift, you do not need to feel pressured to give one. That is always a tough situation. Possibly give a card or take the coworker for coffee or something like that after Christmas.

Yes, you are expected to reciprocate, because Xmas is a time for exchanging gifts and its all in the air, its not like any other ocassion or festival, Xmas means sharing and having that beautiful festive feeling.
Though there is no rule to reciprocate whatsoever, its always nice to, irrespective of what it is..
Its the thought that counts
Merry Xmas!

No. Because if you do, then he or she will know that the only reason you gave the gift was for reciprocation. Then it makes them feel guilty. So unless you already planned on giving a gift, don't do it.

I feel like yes... and I hate it... Today my boss gave us all about $30 worth of gifts and I wasn't expecting to buy him a gift but at lunch I went to the mall and got him something... I feel weird when people give you a gift and you are not expecting it and then you rush out and get them one.

You don't have to ... but it would be nice if you did, and it may seem rude if you don't. So just do the right thing ... give them a gift too. Don't spend too much on it. Just get them something you think they may like. I'm sure you have time to do that when shopping for other people?

If it is really not expected. I would say no. But if you both joked or talked about getting each other a gift

I wouldn't think that I am expected to, but I will reciprocate anyway.
