It depends on what you plan to do with the score. If you're applying to a highly selective college, it's not great. But if you have a strong gpa and your college choice is not impacted (more students applying than room for them), it might be just fine.

To be competitive at most seletive schools you need to average 500 on each test. And to be competitive at highly selective schools you need to average at least 600 on each test. Visit the website of your college choices and check the freshman profile. What was the average SAT score for incoming freshmen last year?

Take some time to prepare and take the test again. There are plenty of on-line free resources for the SAT. And your school should have some prep books that you can check out too.

In the meantime, keep reading anything you can get your hands on. Newspapers, magazines, fiction and homework. it will build your vocabulary and writing scores. And pay attention in Math class. Go to all the after school tutoring sessions you can find.

Good luck!

If you minus the writing section from mine, I would have got 1180 on the old SAT, so your score is pretty bad to be quite honest. My score this time was 1760. You should have at least a 1500 to be average (500 in each section).
