I like McAfee's, but everyone has thier own opinions. Things to look for are:
Spyware sweeps, anti-virus, firewall. You'll want a company that has daily updates (or close to it), since new virus's and spyware are out everyday. Also be aware of a new type of virus called a "root-kit". This is a nasty booger, that actually gets loaded into the BIOS (basic instruction area) of the computer, below where even most AV programs work. McAfee looks for these as well, which is one of the reasons I like them.
for a firewall, make sure you have something that monitors connections in and out of your computer, and some will monitor the actual programs that are running on your PC as well, to make sure they're not being used by malicious programs.
Remember you get what you pay for :)
Best of luck!

Forget any security suites!!
They are TERRIBLY invasive and will eat up most of your memory resources. Some will go as far as interupting your internet browsing.
Just get yourself a non invasive antivirus like AVG free edition
Zone Alarm Free edition
Adaware SE free edition
They are all TOP softwares and use small amount of memory resources and they are NOT invasive. Most people who use Norton Suites end up asking later : Why my PC is so slow?? etc..

For a firewall. ZoneAlarm hands down. ZoneAlarm is perhaps the best firewall that I've seen. If you are attacked by a hacker, ZoneAlarm will not only stop the hacker dead in his tracks, it allows you the option to track down the hacker, and even sometimes gives you the exact location of the attacker. so you can alert authorities.
