What are some steps you'd recommend to becoming more assertive, especially in social situations (with friends, at parties, etc) rather than at work?

I'd like some ideas on practical things to do or think in order to become assertive. "Practice!" doesn't help. Practice what?

look around you and pick someone you think is assertive. then see if there is one thing they do that you can kind of copy (not EXACTLY --making you like a stalker)....and do yourself. As a first step...

Fight the urge to hesitate when you feel your basic human needs and respect boundaries are not being met. Politely but sternly hold your ground from the factual perspective of reason.

Set a goal in your mine. Be assertive but not aggressive. You have to build you confidence up and you will get better.
