I do not remember a focus on American gov't until my senior year of high school. Schools in Florida these days spend all their time teaching children how to pass the FCAT, instead of actually teaching curriculum. It is a huge mess! Americans are probably the laziest people of a wealthy nation when it comes to knowing what is going on in government and education. Our education falls so far behind the rest of the world, it is downright embarrassing, not to mention outrageous. Most Americans can name the three stooges, but far fewer Americans can name the three branches of government. Improving our children's education is essential, but first we (the adults) have to make some major changes ourselves. Like demand that news be reported accurately, by not allowing scandal to go unchecked, by holding our leaders to the same laws we follow, by making an INFORMED vote, and so on.
I could go on for a while, but I'll get off my soapbox now.

In both Tennessee where I used to live and Texas where I now live, a full year of a U.S. History class as well as a 1/2 year Government class are required for graduation from high school.

Unfortunately, most schools teach what the Liberals think history SHOULD be, not what it is. For example, if you ask them, most kids will tell you that the American Civil War was fought to free the slaves, when it was actually fight to keep the South from breaking away from the Union so they could keep their slaves. And don't even ask what they teach about the discovery of North America.

In the state of Indiana, it is a requirement for all 12th graders to take government and economics. As for traditional U.S. history, all 11th graders are required to take the class. In Indiana, it starts with the American Revolution and not colonial times. They teach colonial life in the lower grades.

Sure doesnot seem like it reading some of the silliness on here. They teach, it is just that the little kids don't learn unless a slut singer or drugged up sports player says something.
