The important political development in American History is how Israel hijacked the whole country - the politicians and the media. The interesting thing is that the Americans are thinking that the Israelis are their friends!

If this is for a research paper, try the amendment giving the Senate election to a popular vote. Number 17, I think. Until that time, senators were appointed by state legislators, giving each state a strong voice in the government. Now they have no power, and the Federal government cares nothing for States' Rights. With the income tax, it was a real blow to freedom in the USA.

Here are a few landmark developments over the last 225-plus years, (not in any particular order):
The extension of the Right to Vote to all adult US Citizens, regardless of property or education or social position, or race, or sex, or political belief or party affiliation.
The Rights of Free Speech and the Press enlarged to include political dissent., and the upholding of minority rights.
The Right of "One Man--One Vote"--for equal representation in electing local and state public officials and members of Congress.
The direct election of US Senators (since 1913 --17th Amendment.)
The Supremacy of the Federal Government over the states.
The abolition of Slavery.
Judicial Review:The development of the US Supreme Court's (and lesser appellate and trial courts) right to declare acts of Congress and the Executive (President) unconstitutional; and to declare acts of the states and local governments unconstitutional.
