You will not need a visa as you will be able to enter underthe Visa Waiver Program if you meet the following four conditions:
1) You are only visiting (not working) for 90 days or less;
2) You do not have a criminal record;
3) You have a biometric passport if issued after 26th October 2006 (machine readable will be accepted if it was issued before 26th October 2006);
4) there will soon be a requirement to state where you are staying for the first night in the US so you must have booked accomodation or stay with friends/relatives.

Not for a holiday. I've been twice to New York in the past 18 months and they just get you to fill out a form on the flight. NOTE: I think that you must have at least 6 MONTHS left on your passport.
Visit www.fco.gov.uk for complete travel facts for all countries in the world from the Foreign Office - brilliant website!

Not if you are going for less than 90 days, and you are going there as a leisure traveller (IE your not going there to work!!)
You gain entry under the "Visa Waiver Scheme"
At the departure airport in the UK, at check in, you need to tell the airline agent your accomadation adress in the USA.
During the flight, you will have to fill in a I94 green landing card, and a customs declaration form...
At least that's what happen to me when I went to Newark NY & San Francisco on seperate journeys...

I see you got conflicting answers so i looked it up on the State Dept. web site to see for SURE. The uninted Kingdom is on the Visa Waiver Program so if your visit is for 90 days or less and you have a valid British passport, you do not need a visa. You can go to the web site below and read for yourself for peace of mind. hope you have a great trip.

You're still getting cnflicting answers but Steve M 's answer is spot on. If you're going on hol, you fill out a form on the plane and your passport must have at least 6 months before it expires.
Have a good trip!

If it's for a holiday, then, at the moment, no.
You will have to fill out a visa waiver form on the flight (only takes a few minutes).
