The Evinrude/Johnsons are all decent, the Clinton was a workhorse, it was sorta Evinrude/Johnson but had to be renamed becuase Sears had a Contract and the store that sold them didnt. So they moved the plant, built them for 5 years and named them Clintons. That was in the 1980s. I forget the name of the store, it was in all the malls and stuff back then.
The 58 Sport Twin is very well known as that one fella said as reliable and reactive.
The Sailmaster is another good one.
But thats like asking wich ford was the best ever built. There is no real answer.

I've got a 1958 Evinrude 10 hp. Sport Twin. It has twin points and twin coils . One for each cylinder. I replaced the coils and points for the first time in 2005. I got the parts across the counter from NAPA Auto Parts without having to order them.

Until the coil coating started cracking causing the spark to jump to ground I never had a problem starting it year after year after year. It always starts on the first pull. It takes two after setting all winter. Ok, one time it did take three.

It may not be the best one ever built but it's dam sure one of em !

I liked the 48 SPL until it ate a piston ring but, the "Rudes" were known for that. It lasted 16 yrs

HINT: Fuel is awful now, use "Carbon Guard" fuel additive (IT'S CHEAP), and the carbon will not build up inside the cylinder, extending engine life.

Not mine. After months of aggravation I hope it's fixed.
