I'd like to be a writer but I know discipline is a big factor and I often just don't feel like doing it, or have no ideas. What do you do to keep up discipline and write regularly?

Don't wait for some divine intervention or muse for inspiration. These are fictional entities. To get ideas, try freewriting. Set a time limit and just write down anything and everything that comes to mind. At the end of the time read what you've written. You'd be surprised how many ideas for short stories or essays you can pull from a freewriting exercise. Just write everyday no matter how much or how little you actually get down on paper. Keep a journal, record daily activities, whatever. These will give you a record of possible material to use later and will help broaden your vocabulary and writing skills. Good luck!

Well...I'd like to be a rock star, but I can't sing. Really, if you love to write, which is what a writer should be--in love with writing--then the discipline issue fades away. Discipline is for people who work; if you do what you like or love doing, then it's not really work, so the strict "discipline isn't necessary.

So...if you're feeling that you'd like to be a writer, but are afraid about disciplining yourself to do it and are concerned about not having any ideas, perhaps it is something you should reconsider. That's not to say that you won't EVER be a writer, just that you'll recognize it in yourself when or if the time comes. And if that time comes, you'll find the discipline in your love of the art.

That is a broad question that could be applied to many things.

You'll need to figure out what works for you, but basically it comes down to writing a certain number of words per day or writing for a specified amount of time each day.

It may help to understand your motivation for writing. Why you write may determine if you want to write when you don't feel like it or not. If writing is merely for pleasure, why would you want to write when you don't feel like it. I mean might as well eat chocolate if pleasure is the objective.

So the simple answer, though perhaps not the easy one, is to commit to a number of words or number of minutes per day, and do it.

I don't have discipline when it comes to writing. When you have discipline, you are blocked off from some of your best ideas.

set a schedule. every morning write a certain amount. gradually increase this amount. soon you will be able to write more and more without dreading it, or having such a hard time with it.

if its something you are passionate about then you will do it...set daily goals for yourself that you can meet.. keep your expectations to where you can get to them so you dont frustrate yourself.. if you have no ideas look at the things around you..the people around you..your ideas will come to you..
