On the back of my copy of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone instead of Albus Dumbledore smiling I have a picture of a youngish man wearing red robes holding a pipe in one hand and a book in the other. He had brown hair and a shortish brown beard, wearing a wizards hat without the rim (like the students wear in the films) which is also red.

The question is WHO IS HE? He cant be Hagrid because he's skinny, he cant be Dumbledore because Dumbledore had white hair etc, so I cant think who it could be. Does anyone have any ideas? I think I bought the book about the time Prisoner of Azkaban came out coz I bought all three at once and PoA is in Hardback.

ANY HELP GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

Sorry, we have different cover art here in the US...different title too for that matter. Maybe he was one of the older students, or someone from Diagon Alley. ...or just a random wizard.

I've been puzzling over the same thing. My only guess is he's very much like i imagin Professor Flitwick to look like... only taller. Though also he could be on of the wizards Harry meets in the shops when growing up with the Dursley's or in the Leaky Couldron. JK Rowling describes them in detail, though i couldn't say off the top of my head. He could be Quirrel but i reckon the drawing's too genial.
Sorry i couldn't be more help but my copy is at Uni.
