If you are running Windows XP Pro, it has a firewall built into the operating system.
If you go to your Control Panel (Start, then Control Panel), then go to the Security Center (looks like a shield with colored quadrants), you can turn your firewall on or off.

SP2 comes with a good XP firewall. Just use it , I think it is activate by default. Or use Zone Alarm it is great and not invasive.

If you use a router get into the configuration and turn it on.
A hardware firewall is always better than a software firewall. I personally runs my router firewall & zone alarm without any issue.

Good luck,

Joe.
