December 21st ( today ) marks the beginning of the Winter Solstice for the United States. June 21st marks the beginning of winter for Australia.

Contemporary meteorology takes winter to be the months of December, January, and February in the Northern Hemisphere and June, July, and August in the Southern Hemisphere.

Yes, today is the first day of winter but you would never know it by the weather we are having...Unless of course you live in Denver...which I am not. I am in dreary, blustery, dirty and WET Illinois where our high today was 47. Doesn't seem like winter or Christmas for that matter. It's a good thing Christmas is in our hearts and not what the weather or mood is...Enjoy it where ever you are and God Bless!!!!

Yup, that's today in the northern hemisphere--the shortest day of the year--December 21. I saw the weather for Australia, and it looked like high temps in the upper 80s. Winter Solstice.
