Always try. Write something. Don't hand in an empty paper. Try to write something that sounds reasonable for the questions.

Pray!
Seriously though, I'm sure you'll know something from just being in the class. A good test will have a mixture of easy and difficult questions. Complete the easy questions first. When you start going through the hard questions, there is usually at least one answer that is obviously wrong. Put a line through the letter or number of the answer that is obviously wrong, so it will be "weeded out". Leave the answer blank for now. Keep going through the test in that way. If you start to run out of time, then make your best guess. The same is true for matching and true/false questions. Essay questions, you can write done things as you remember them on scrap. Then write the essay. Don't leave any question blank. Even an answer of "Mickey Mouse" is better than leaving a blank. These strategies will work whether you have studied or not.
After the test, remind yourself to study and/or get help before the next one!!

If it's multiple choice...pick one answer A, B,C, D or whatever. Answer EVERY question with the same answer. 1 in 4 or 1 in 5 will be right, and you should at least pass. That's what a Navy Recruiter told me, but I've never mathematically equated it! Worked for me tho, on a big exam.
Plus, to the answerer who is a teacher...I hope you don't teach spelling.

On multiple choice, think through the questions logically, use the process of elimination, guess if their is no penalty for wrong answers, anything to pick up point. On essays, just go with what you know, in my experience adding a bunch of junk to fill it out only lowers your grade.

If you leave it blank, you are gaurenteed to get a zero on the question. If you give it a try, you have a chance that you might get part marks.
Try to answer it, taking educated guesses. And don't just re-write the question in different wording.

Play eeny meeny miney mo if it's multiple questions.
Answering all the questions is better then leaving them blank.
You might get some right instead of getting a zero because you didn't try.

Guess or leave it blank if it doesnt count against you, like in the SATs leaving it blank is recommended cause it doesnt count against you as opposed to if you guess and get it wrong.

Guess. Usually no harm in guessing. You might get something right.
