Well, now I see why your mother doesn't want you using them. There's this thing called TSS (toxic shock syndrome) which occurs when you leave your tampon in for too long. Read the packaging that comes with the tampons to decide how often you should be changing them. A general rule of thumb is everytime you go to the bathroom, change it. You are probably using an absorbancy level too high for your flow. If you can go that long without changing your tampon, it's probably the wrong one for you. Try using a lighter absorbancy level and change it more often. Why didn't you talk to your mother about this? She is a woman, she menstrates (or at least she did at one point). She knows what it's like. That's what mothers are for. You may think you know everything you need to know, but believe me, your mother knows more. She loves you. Let her in!

I would say that 4-5 hours is average.

I am almost 20, and I have had my period for ten years. I don't use tampons unless I have to (swimming mainly) because I don't like them. I got my period at the age of 9 and wasn't allowed to use tampons till about 14 or 15.

I think it's a matter of age and maturity rather than "not being stupid." I don't think that girls should use tampons right away for the first year or two. That's just always how I've been brought up. Pads still exist.

First, you shouldn't be afraid to tell mama that you got your period. But everybody is different so whatever suits you.
Second, yes 7 to 4:30 is too long!!! The box says no longer than 8 hours, I try to go no longer than 7 hours. Every 5 to 6 hours is good. Even if your flow is not heavy. If it's really light try an ultra-thin maxi or a pantyliner.
If you don't want to talk to your mama about these things, maybe an older cousin, or an aunt, or even your doctor. It's good to have somebody close to you when you have problems with girlie things. Just a suggestion though.

Hope things go well for you! :)

For starters, a tampon should be changed at MOST every 7 hours. It says on the box how long. Bacteria can build up in them, even if you didn't overflow..

There's nothing wrong with using tampons. I got my period at eleven and used them at twelve. I think she just doesn't want you using them because it stretches your hymen, and she probably believes that should be broken on your wedding night. You'll probably recall it hurt the first time? That was your hymen stretching, but it most likely didn't break.

Explain to her your reasons for using them. Personally, it feels cleaner to me, and tell her it's not going to make you any less a virgin because your hymen is stretched. You could even play the 'my first-time will feel better' card if you want to.

But honestly, it's your personal preference, and she can't do anything about it anyways.

Good lucky and Merry Christmas =)

Usually 4-5 hours is the average time for a tampon to be in, unless it's a heavy flow. ( For me, if i can see red on the string its time to change) There are many different kinds of tampons some designed for smaller or larger people and light and heavy flows, getting a multi-pack is helpful to make sure your covered im all circumstances.

Yeah, that's too long. If you have a light flow, try "junior absorbency" they don't cause dryness or TSS as easily as the heavy absorbency ones do.

And talk to your mom, ask her why she's concerned about tampon use. If you talk it out you might come to an agreement.

Also, now that you've started, it time to see a gynecologist pretty soon. She might be able to help you convince your mom that tampons are okay.

well..i don't have anything against tampon as long as you use them correctly. Yes, that would be long time, the bacteria may have started to live in their. Why not try every 4 hours? This may sound weird but tampos are more prone to infection because you are inserting them inside the vagina, givng the bacteria a chance to penetrate easily (especially if the person inserting did not practice proper hygiene ). While pads, stay outside and easily monitored if it is still clean ans okay. Hope this helps. God bless

it's too long....maximum is 8 hours. read the insert/packaging of your tampons. leaving it for more than that risk you of toxic shock syndrome. also use lower absorbency than your flow.

that is TOO long, go 3 hours at the most to be on the safe side...even if you don't have a heavy flow so you won't get an infection...those are scary

Change the tampon every four hours no matter how light your flow is. You don't want TSS. It's not worth it.
